About

Archive Farms, Inc is a U.S. based company that owns and manages specialized archives of historical photos and historical footage. Our collections include:

THE TRAVEL FILM ARCHIVE – a collection of travelogues and educational and industrial films, many of them in color, that show the world the way it was between 1900 and 1970. Holdings include archives of the renowned travel filmmakers Burton Holmes, Andre de la Varre, and James A. FitzPatrick, as well as footage shot by many other intinerant cameramen.

THE BERT MORGAN ARCHIVE –  more than 500,000 negatives taken between the 1930s and the 1980s by photographers Bert and Richard Morgan at parties, openings, fundraisers, sporting events, home sittings, weddings  and other functions attended by the rich and famous including several generations of America’s most prominent families – Vanderbilts, Whitneys, Dillons, Biddles, Phipps, Kennedys, Hearsts, Fords, Roosevelts, Astors, and Lauders – as well as European royalty and stars of the stage and screen.

THE CARIBBEAN PHOTO ARCHIVE – a collection of original photographs taken throughout the Caribbean Islands, the Bahamas and Bermuda in the 19th century and early 20th century. Caribbean islands pictured include Jamaica, Martinique, Barbados, Trinidad, St Vincent. St Lucia, St Kitts, Grenada, Curacao, St Thomas, St Croix, Dominica, Nevis, Montserrat and Guadeloupe. Nearly every photographic format is represented including salt prints, albumen prints, gelatin silver prints, stereocards, carte-de-visites, cabinet cards, and glass slides. Subjects depicted include plantation life, natural disasters, tourism, hotels, markets, education, military, churches, architecture, government, home life and recreation.

THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY ARCHIVE – a collection of original 19th and 20th century photographs and related artifacts that traces the technical and artistic development of photography and photo-mechanical printing from their origins in England and France in the early 19th century up through worldwide use in the mid-20th century. We have tried to identify important milestones in this fascinating history and then acquire original images, literature and equipment which illustrate these events. It is not a fine art collection, but rather an archive designed to represent important developments and the innovators who made them.

THE BURTON HOLMES ARCHIVE – the world’s largest repository of films, photographs, programs, scrapbooks, and other ephemera related to the life and career of Burton Holmes, the “Father of the Travelogue”. Burton Holmes coined the term “Travelogue” in 1904 to advertise his unique live stage presentations combining stories of his travels with slides and motion pictures and became the world’s most famous traveler during the first half of the 20th century through his books, magazine articles, lectures and films. Also included in this collection are photographs, programs, films and other items by and of Andre de la Varre (1902-1987) who was associated with Holmes for 40 years, first as his cameraman in the 1920s and 1930s and then as his partner in the 1950s

THE INDUSTRY FILM ARCHIVE – a collection of industrial films, also known as sponsored films, made by companies and trade associations between the 1920s and the 1960s to promote a new product, industrial process or even an entire industry. They were originally intended for showing to customers and for limited non-theatrical screenings and were often distributed free to television stations in the early days of television. When viewed now they often seem dated and even laughable, but serve to illustrate important aspects of modern life which were documented unintentionally: hairstyles, popular fashions, technological advances, social mores, etc. Today footage from these films is used as stock footage in new documentary productions, either as historical illustration, or to satirical effect. The collection also includes films made for educational distribution to schools and newsreels which relate to American industry and products.

THE NEWSREEL ARCHIVE – a collection of complete newsreels and newsreel excerpts from the heyday of the theatrical newsreel in the 1930’s, 1940’s and 1950’s.

THE FOOD FILM ARCHIVE – a collection of educational and industrial films from the 1930’s. 1940’s and 1950’s about the growing, catching, making and consuming of food.

THE EDUCATIONAL FILM ARCHIVE –  a collection of educational films made for use in schools, primarily in the U.S. between the 1920s and the 1960s.

THE SILENT FILM ARCHIVE – a collection of film clips from classic comedies and dramas of the silent film era transferred from 35mm original prints and negatives.
